This gathering will provide the community with an opportunity to learn about the history and the future of the Russian River Clean-ups, and what can be done to continue this important contribution to the environmental sustainability of the Russian River and inland Mendocino County.

The gathering will feature a talk by Rebecca Kress, the founder and organizer of the Russian River Cleanup campaigns since 1991, who will be leaving the project in 2010.

Several individuals and groups have expressed interest in continuing this project, and this gathering will be an opportunity for networking and possible collaborations.

Landowners along the river, volunteers and interested people and groups are invited to attend and discuss the project and the sponsorship of future clean-ups and related events.

For more information contact Rebecca Kress at 707-463-4589.

    **

The Russian River Cleanup project and campaign has removed over 5,480 tires, hundreds of tons of appliances, toxics and trash from the river, recycling what was possible.

For more information about the project, see the Ukiah Daily Journal article, "Rebecca Kress - The River Lady' prepares for final year," at the website linked above.

    From the article:
"I try to find positive ways to give scary news to kids, but always with solutions," says Kress. In the meantime, she hopes that individuals, service clubs, churches and other agencies will consider what they are willing to do to preserve one of the county's most significant and singular resources. "Let's start the local drive to keep Rebecca's river alive," smiles Kelly.

Note on the Kid Friendly Quick Pick:

There won't be activities for kids, but Rebecca's talk will be older kids-friendly. Rebecca teaches kids of all ages in the Mendocino County school systems about the importance of knowing about water issues and our watershed, and watersheds in general.
