As a sequel to last year’s Workshop entitled PLASTIC: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, this year we bring you PLASTIC: The Good, The Bad, & The DEADLY! Our homes are filled with plastics, and most of us don't really know what they're made of - or whether they're safe.
Nancy Astid Lindo of Astrid Design Studio is back again to enlighten us on just how we can effectively reduce or eliminate the use of plastic inside the home and in our bodies. She will present all of the latest research findings on the dangers of the various chemicals found in many modern plastic products including pthalates, BPA and PVC which affect sex hormones, cause obesity, chromosomal abnormalities, and can even cause cancer. You will also see a water sample from The Great Pacific Garbage Patch and find out about practical products that make great alternatives to plastic.
Here are a few facts on plastic bags and bottles that may help you realize how drastic the situation really is:
* Less than 1% of plastic bags are recycled. It actually cost more to recycle a plastic bag than to produce one, so there is no monetary incentive to recycle plastic bags.
* 38 million plastic bottles go to the dump per year in America from bottled water (not including soda)
* Plastic bottles take 700 years to begin composting in a landfill
* Approximately 1 BILLION seabirds and mammals die per year by ingesting plastic bags
More than a workshop, this is A CALL TO ACTION. We must take a stand for our health & that of the planet and begin to eliminate the use of plastics as much as possible. To RSVP for address and directions please email Julie: contactgbf@gmail.com Workshop fee $10.
As our way of saying thanks each participant will receive a re-usable shopping bag and a 16 oz. glass container.
