The Sustainable Communities in the North conference will be held February 25-26, 2010, with the first day hosted at Confederation College and the second at Lakehead University. The conference offers a forum for all communities and businesses in Northern Ontario to connect and collectively address sustainability challenges that are particular to our communities.
The conference will be held annually in order to enable the Communities of Northern Ontario to:
1. Provide a forum for constructive dialogue about the unique challenges faced by Northern Ontario communities.
2. Identify and reassess strengths and weaknesses with respect to the four pillars of sustainability: * Ecological integrity & resilience * Social and Cultural vibrancy & diversity * True value economics * Political will
3. Identify solutions and opportunities for collaboration in the face of challenges around sustainable communities in the North with a particular emphasis on * Energy descent and alternatives * Food security * Water source protection * Social equity and resilient communities
4. Empower communities, organizations and individuals with the skills and knowledge to carry out sustainable action in their communities.
5. Build connections and capacity between communities, organizations and individuals whose aims are to improve the resilience of Northern Ontario.
6. Accessibility. The conference will be conducted in such a way that it may be accessed with relative ease by all citizens of Northern Ontario, with a particular focus on: * Affordability * Remote access * Inclusion
Registration prices include access to conference speakers, workshops and Green Business Expo and Career Fair. Breakfast and lunch are also provided.
