Join experts and specialists from all over Ontario and further abroad for our three-day symposium on sustainable horticulture.

    Join us as we consider:
    * What part does horticulture play in making urban Canada a healthy, productive place to live?
    * How does our urban landscape - gardens, parks, lawns, ecologically designed hardscapes, green roofs and other innovations - ensure that well-being and biodiversity are supported and enhanced?
    * What steps can all practitioners of horticulture - from the trades to home gardeners and plant breeders - take to issues like invasive species, pest management and urban biodiversity?

Our special symposium will explore these and many other questons.

The 2010 Symposium features Gardening for Resilience: Climate Change and Horticulture through Mid-Century conference.

How we are trying to make this event "green":

    Greening Our Event

At Royal Botanical Gardens we are committed to improving the sustainability of everything we do. In all of the aspects of our symposium we’ve taken steps to minimize waste, make use of reusable materials and minimize our energy consumption.

In planning for our 2010 symposium we’ve doing a lot:

    1. Office Practices: Registration and other procedures for our symposium are being done in as nearly paperless a manner as possible. We prefer that registrants use our on-line system, which is entirely paperless.

    2. Food Services: Our food services provider, Pepperwood Catering, is participating in our symposium and is committed to minimizing our event’s footprint. We will be using reusable and washable cutlery, plates and cups for our refreshments and meals.

    3. Participant Hand-Outs: We will be preparing and handing out as little printed material as possible for participants. Instead of loading our participants down with printed materials from our speakers and partners in registration packages, we will be giving everyone a USB thumb drive pre-loaded with presentations and other documents. We’re not expecting everyone to bring computers with them to the meeting, but when you take the USB chip home with you, you can keep the documents you like and will then have a completely reusable USB drive.

    4. Meeting Facilitation: We will be using some paper tools during the symposium for our facilitation process. Flip charts and other materials are very useful and flexible, and right now there aren’t any good substitutes available to us. However, we will be purchasing only high-post-consumer-content recycled paper products for our workshops, and will be recycling all of paper we use in the workshops.

    5. Transportation: We encourage all participants to calculate the CO2 emissions produced in relation to their travel to our event. We will be surveying all participants during the meeting to find out the mode of transport you’ve used, the distance travelled, and whether you’ve chosen to offset your travel. This information will help us plan future events.

    6. Offsetting CO2 Emissions from Our Event: We’ve partnered with CarbonZero to ensure that our event has as small a net carbon footprint as possible.
